Introducing the LAB-AIDS
Applied Science Concepts Modules

LAB-AIDS® Applied Science Concepts Modules were developed (like all LAB-AIDS® products) based on the belief that students learn science best by doing science.

As students complete a carefully designed set of investigations and experiences, they will develop their own understanding of important concepts.

All module activities relate to everyday experiences that involve events or objects in the home, school, or workplace. This makes science more relevant to students. It also helps them realize that science is everywhere, not just in the classroom. The activities support the development of process skills and a conceptual understanding. LAB-AIDS® Applied Science Concepts Modules are inquiry-driven and standards-based. They are appropriate for all students, regardless of previous experience. All materials have been extensively field tested.

There are currently four LAB-AIDS
Applied Science Concepts Modules:

The modules consist of a Teacher’s Guide, a classroom science materials kit; and a CD-ROM which provides additional teacher background and content. Students use a science notebook to keep track of ideas and investigations.

The Teacher’s Guide is designed to help teachers prepare and conduct the activities in the classroom. It also helps them to assess what students know and can do as a result of completing the module activities. It contains the following sections:
  • Module Overview includes a brief summary of the relevant national standards and science concepts covered. It also includes the amount of time needed for each activity.

  • Introduction to Applied Science Concepts Modules explains the overall program design and the scope and sequence. It also focuses on the module’s approach to inquiry learning.

  • Tools for Teaching includes the use of the equipment kit, student journals, Question Board, and the teacher CD. It provides a detailed presentation of the overall lesson format and a guide to assessing the students’ knowledge.

  • Kit Overview lists the kit contents and instructions for their safe use.

  • Science Summary contains science content background information.

  • The Activities contain: overview, materials list, science background, preparation, and a step-by-step activity guide for the teacher. Student Sheet black-line masters and transparency masters are also included.

  • Appendices provide additional information and resources. They include a test item bank with answers for assessing student learning and a correlation of these materials to the National Science Education Standards (NRC, 1996).

Look What Teachers
Are Saying...

SEPUP has brought the 'thrill' of teaching to an all time high for me. It enables me to actively engage the students in the process of learning. As I guide then through the activities, the focus shifts from me as a disseminator of 'facts' to the student as an involved learner. Curricula developed by SEPUP fosters the development of critical thinking skills and the use of evidence to make decisions, which, to me, are life long skills needed to be a contributing member of society.

Since I starting using SEPUP's Issues, Evidence, and You, I no longer have students asking why they need to learn about a particular concept or theory. They (students) see and understand the relevance to their lives since the curriculum is based on issues in the real world. While examining and investigating these issues, the students learn the science concepts and theories needed to meet the National and State science requirements.
