LAB-AIDS ASC Modules: Investigating Light
| Light and shadows go together and play an important role in how we perceive the world. The simplest
optical phenomenon is a shadow. They occur because light always travels in straight lines away from its
source, and because light interacts with matter.
Shadows are almost always present, but most of us haven’t ever stopped to interpret them as evidence
of light’s varied interactions with matter, measure them or understand how their size and other characteristics
are consequences of the straight-line nature of light.
In this module, students are asked to complete six investigations:
Investigation 1 Exploring the behavior of shadows and the straight line nature of light
Investigation 2 Characterizing shadows and the effect of different light sources
Investigation 3 Working with light beams, and examining light’s interactions with matter
Investigation 4 Quantifying the size of a shadow
Investigations 5 & 6 2 investigations apply shadows to graphically and mathematically determine
unknown sizes of objects
