LAB-AIDS ASC Modules: Color and Spectrum

Sunsets, rainbows, traffic lights - we’re surrounded by light and color. It’s an important part of our lives and how we learn what is going on around us.

But what is color?

Exploring the relationship between the physical properties of light and the sensation of color will help students understand much of what they see.

White light can be separated into many wavelengths, and colored light can be combined to form white light.

Studying how light can be separated and combined helps students understand how light interacts with matter.

Students complete 8 investigations:

Investigation 1
Separating and describing the spectrum of white light

Investigation 2
Making and using a spectroscope to discover properties of light

Investigation 3
Classifying lights at home and school by their spectra

Investigation 4
Studying how light interacts with color filters

Investigation 5
Investigating how colored light changes the “color” of colored objects

Investigation 6
Combining colored light beams to make white light and other colors

Investigation 7
Using luminescent material to study absorption, emission and conservation of energy

Light sources are required to perform these activities.
