LAB-AIDS ASC Modules: Reflection and Refraction
Light travels in a straight line-except
when it doesn’t! Interesting things happen when light moves from one medium to another.
It can be transmitted or absorbed, and can even change direction through reflection and refraction.
Understanding these concepts helps us to understand how to use light to transfer energy and information and to
make useful tools such as cameras, microscopes and telescopes.
Students complete 9 investigations:
Investigation 1
Exploring
what you see-and don’t see-in plane mirrors
Investigation 2 Discovering the rule for reflection of light in plane mirrors
Investigation 3 Tracking light beams to understand images in mirrors
Investigation 4 Using curved mirrors to cause light to diverge or converge to an image point
Investigation 5 Observing light beams refract (change direction) as they move from one medium to another
Investigation 6 Making and measuring images
Investigation 7 Measuring the focal length of lenses
Investigation 8 Making a model camera-an application of lenses and images
Investigation 9 Using lenses to focus light energy and watching it convert to heat energy
Light sources are required to perform these activities.
