Workshop: Fast and Furious-Force and Motion for Middle School

Students investigate concepts related to force and motion in the context of vehicle safety issues. The unit begins with investigations of speed, motion graphs, and the impact of mass and speed on vehicle accidents. Students investigate force, acceleration, mass, and friction and are introduced to Newton's laws of motion. They apply these concepts to vehicle braking and stopping distances and investigate the stability of vehicles with different centers of mass. The unit ends with an investigation of types of car accidents and students' recommendations for reducing the risks of vehicle collisions.

Workshop: Middle School Genetics Made Easy, Interesting and Fun

Okay, maybe not easy, but interesting and fun, definitely! "Joe may have Marfan's syndrome" is an example of one of the many engaging activities from the Genetics unit in SEPUP's Issues and Life Science program. Students are asked to advise Joe after building the concepts of heritability, nature v. nurture, and analyzing pedigree charts of Joes's family. Join us for this hands-on overview and discover some better methods and materials to teach genetic concepts.

Workshop: Inquiry Teaching and Learning: The Periodic Table

This middle level activity series is taken from the Master unit from the SEPUP Issues and Physical Science course, developed with support from the National Science Foundation and used in classrooms across the country. Participants will classify a series of 20 element cards - first using criteria of their own choosing, then using current classifications used by modern chemists. They then examine ways to support the analysis questions, literacy, assessment, and technology associated with the activity. Take away handouts and materials to use in class next week!

Workshop: Real Chemistry for All Students, but How?

What are the barriers to teaching real, quantitative chemistry to all students, in a way that they can succeed? Dr. Tom Hsu will lead a hands-on exploration that will touch the areas of greatest student difficulty and show you many intuitive and practical solutions that will help your students engage with chemistry and learn. A Natural Approach to Chemistry does not require bunsen burners, nor fume hoods, and all experiments use non-toxic chemicals that can be easily disposed of. This is real chemistry without expensive chemical disposal fees!

Workshop: Subscripts and coefficients? I'm confused...

Keep your students from getting confused with a fun and powerful way to learn the meaning of the chemical formula and the key concepts of stoichiometry. This unique method uses a brand new molecular modeling kit developed specifically for teaching core concepts in chemistry. At the end of the workshop we will connect chemistry with living systems by building a protein the length of the room!

Workshop: Bring Earth Science to Life in Your Elementary Classroom!

Having trouble finding motivating and engaging earth science materials that kids actually enjoy? Join us as we delve into some new LAB-AIDS kits that address the rock cycle, mineral properties, and rock types in an issue-oriented way. We will also review our newest resource for Elementary earth science - Earth and You is a DVD-based package created by the American Geological Institute. You'll really dig theses new materials!

Look What Teachers
Are Saying...

SEPUP represents best practice in science teaching. With direction from the National Science Standards, SEPUP provides environmental contexts that stimulate students to act as science practitioners. The performance assessment rubrics allow students to actively participate in the evaluation of their work. Over the year, students develop a broad range of skills including; lab design and investigation skills, communication of science ideas, and evaluation of evidence and tradeoffs.

The science vehicle is delivered through many disciplines: applied math, social perspectives, reading in the content area, and written expression just to name a few. Thorough lesson plans and pre-sorted lab materials ease the time commitment to a reasonable load for the science teacher to bear. I cannot imagine my teaching career without it!
